The Rise and Rise of the Fashion Blogger: Sakina

The Rise and Rise of the Fashion Blogger: Sakina
"The Tip" recently caught up with Parisian beauty Sakina, one of the main shoppers for Vogue Curvy and the force behind fashion blog "Saks In the City"

What was the main motivation behind starting your blog?

In France there aren’t many options in plus size fashion. We don't have any fashionable plus size stores for younger women and it's really hard to find cute pieces in stores. I've always been stopped in the streets by curvy girls who wanted to ask me where are my clothes from, so one day it hit me! Why not share all my finds' nline with other curvy girls. That's when I thought about creating my blog. I also wanted to break the rules as many curvy girls have been told what to wear and what not wear. It's my way to saying  'Don't listen to that!’.

As a result of your blog you've become the Paris blogger for Vogue Italia and one of the main shoppers for Vogue Curvy, amongst many things. What's the highlight of your blog journey thus far?
I recently interviewed Beth Ditto in London on behalf of Vogue for her new collection with Evans and it was magical.

In a society that pushes a narrow image of beauty your blog is a beacon of hope for self-acceptance and diversity. How did you come to such a place and do you have any words of advice for women struggling to accept their bodies?
Everyone’s history is different. I've hated myself more than I've loved myself in my life. It's only been a few years since I let things go and stopped torturing myself. Everybody is different and we can't all be skinny. I realised being curvy is not ugly, being curvy is beautiful. Stepping back and believing that is the first step on the road towards loving yourself.

Your blog's all about breaking 'fashion rules' and shaking the status quo. What "fashion rule" do you dislike most and why?
I hate rules in fashion in general and I think fashion should be a reflection of our inner personality. I despise the plus size fashion rules. We're always told curvy ladies should only wear black, or for example never wear skinny jeans. I wear everything I want and never try to dress to look thinner! You'd be surprised to see how plus size girls look good in high waist skirts, skinnies and all those items we’re told we shouldn’t wear.

Which brands do you feel cater best to plus-sized women?
ASOS Curve for their diversity and trendy pieces. Carmakoma a Danish brand which pays great attention to detail. Finally, Dorothy Perkins and Evans.

Can you recommend an "emergency outfit" for our reader in those moments when she's panicking with just 15 minutes to get dressed?
You can never go wrong with a tunic or a dress, black opaque tights and shoes (boots, heels, brogues, sneakers, whatever matches with your style !). Then add a statement piece of jewellery to complete the look.

Finally, can you sum up your style philosophy?

I'm being myself! I never ever wear something I don’t feel comfortable in. I don't need to follow the trends or wear insane high heels to look fashionable. I know what I love and stick to it, my style is simple but that's what I love it!
