She has turned her “misfortune”, into a multimillion-dollar empire. Her predecessor being none other than Paris Hilton, Kim K cleverly rescued her tainted image into a role model for kids worldwide with clothing lines, fragrances, diet supplements and the infamous reality TV programme, Keeping up with the Kardashians.
I’ll admit I am particularly partial to a bit of vacuous modern day “celebrity” gossip and their so-called fabulous lives. I see it as a break from the stresses of everyday life; it’s easier than a session at the gym and more accessible than finding a good Bikram Yoga class. Car crash TV has never looked so beautiful with these girls flittering around the world shod in Louboutin’s and carrying Birkin’s.
Kim Kardashian’s fame has reached such dizzying heights she is releasing a credit card. As if life couldn’t get any more ridiculous! Marketed specifically towards teenagers, kids as young as 13 will have access to a prepaid MasterCard. Although no mention of whether the card is hitting British streets, American kids can sleep happy knowing they can afford the finer things in life “all by themselves” The Gossip Girl generation experience has been taken to an entire new level.
We’re about the hit the second dip of the recession and teenagers are being handed their very own Kim K plastics to go spend on frivolous products to fulfil their frivolous lives. Whatever happened to a new Barbie doll or video game? What does this really say for the younger generation and where they’re heading? What happened to worthy role models? Is she really what a modern day role model has come to? I thought role models were supposed to be talented individuals exerting positive influence!
Will this alter the public’s view on Kim? Hardly. She’s carved out a successful business for herself, has followers on Twitter in excess of 5 million and managed to make her family into the new Osbournes (albeit with more hair extensions). Whilst promoting credit cards for youngsters, which as far as I’m concerned promotes everything but good.
If Kim K defines what is influential is today, then who needs talent to make something of themselves. You may as well release that sex tape and follow in her footsteps. You now have her credit card to help you along the way.
