How to Apply Liquid Foundation

Written by  Stephanie Yeboah
Well applied foundation is a great way of concealing, discolorations and those 'bad skin' days that often happen. The only problem is it can often prove tricky to apply. Here I’ll show you a step-by-step guide on how to use liquid foundation  but still have a natural finish.

For those of you who are fans of tinted moisturiser (which is considered the lightest foundation), liquid foundation is pretty much a step above it. It gives you nice coverage without a powdery, cakey look, and goes on smoothly to even out your skin tone, making it perfect for no makeup yet made up look!

Step 1

Start off with a clean, yet slightly moist face. Depending on your skin type, you may need to further prep your face. If you have oily skin, apply an anti-shine serum to create a matte base. If your skin is dry or combination, apply a light primer. An example of a great primer is GOSH Velvet Touch Foundation Primer.

Step 2
Choose the correct colour of liquid foundation make up for your skin tone. For example, people who have a yellow undertone will benefit from a yellow cast in their foundation. Test the colour on your jaw line rather than your finger or wrist.

Step 3
Put a little liquid foundation onto the back of your hand and with your fingertip, dab the foundation over your face: two dabs on your forehead, two on the cheeks, one on your nose, and one on your chin. Covering the face this way helps ensure a more even and spreadable coverage. Blend the foundation into the skin with your fingers. Using your fingers gives you more control over the foundation and doesn't soak up the makeup the way a brush or sponge may.

Step 4
Take a sponge and blend the foundation into your neck, ears, and hairline to eliminate any obvious lines. I recommend using a sponge because it has the ability to pull and spread out the makeup.

Step 5
To further mask any under eye circles or blemishes, don't try to cover them by matching your skin tone; instead you'll want to cover the blue or purple under eye with a salmon tone to offset the cooler hues. For blemishes with a reddish colour, use a concealer with a green undertone.

Step 6
Finish off by setting the liquid foundation for all day wear. If you have oily skin set the foundation with loose or pressed powder. If you have dry skin, set it with blotting tissues. Some great finishing powders include E.L.F.s High Definition powder (a steal at £6.00) and any one of Mac's Mineralized Skin Finishes (MSFs, depend on your skintone)

Finally, if you love taking photos with cameras that have flash, opt for using a liquid foundation with no or a very low SPF, as it reflects off the flash and produces the “caked edges” effect in photos!
